Dal Lake houseboat accomodation

In the era of the Raj, the British were not permitted to own land in Kashmir.  As Kashmir was a favorite summer destination to escape the heat of the subcontinent the obvious solution to accommodate themselves was to build opulent houseboats on beautiful Dal Lake.  Surrounded by majestic mountains on the outskirts of the bustling city of Srinagar they set about building a floating neighborhood with over 1000 intricately decorated houseboats. These days locals inhabit some of the houseboats and the rest are operated as unique tourist accommodation.

To hear the “call to prayer” before first light, go for a Shikara ride at dawn to the floating markets and watching the kids flying kites over their boats is an experience not to be missed. You can visit one of the many shops on the lake to buy local handicrafts, go for a tour of the city or just kick back and watch the eagles soar and the Shikaras glide past.

Rooms on the boats are twin share and breakfast and dinner are provided. Tea, coffee and Kashmir ’s famous Kawa tea is available at any time and anything else you may want will no doubt be cruising past with one of the floating traders.  Your hosts, Rasool and Yousef are great friends of Bill and his team and can organise anything you may desire.

The Dal Lake houseboat experience is one of the definite highlights of the trip.
